A 10-year-old girl defies the “experts” at the psychosomatic institution where she’s been placed in a straitjacket. A Chinese father scolds his rebellious son while befriending a young American who keeps a secret from his own father. A Bay Area college dropout goes to Hell, where she confronts Satan….
In both fiction and non-fiction, nothing grabs readers more than characters who rebel. But it’s not just characters who are driven to cross boundaries. Writers also take risks in airing taboo themes, speaking unpopular truths, and experimenting with new ways to tell stories.
This cross-genre panel features fiction and memoir writers from Word of Mouth—Bay Area, a group of female-identifying traditionally-published authors founded in 2005. They’ll read works featuring rebellious characters and share the risks they’ve faced in their own writing.
